HYM Seed: A Modern Twist on the Classic Turntable

Lin Huanmin's Award-Winning Design Merges Functionality and Aesthetics

Seed was inspired by the desire to make the vinyl experience more accessible. Traditional record players require numerous devices and can be intimidating and expensive, creating barriers for many music enthusiasts. Seed simplifies this process, integrating all necessary components into one device and presenting them in a beautifully crafted design.

What sets Seed apart from traditional turntables is its unique design and functionality. The curved surface and flip appearance give it a modern and flexible look. More importantly, Seed features a built-in three-point suspension vibration system, enabling the cartridge to play stably and provide the true sound of any music style.

The creation of Seed was a complex process. The bent wooden case was formed by hot pressing and required precise interlacing to minimize deformation. The 'three-point' suspension system incorporates four different densities of material to absorb oscillations at different frequencies, ensuring smooth record reading even under high power bar output.

The project began in 2015 in Shenzhen and was completed in 2017. It was presented at a conference in Beijing in August 2017. The design team, led by Huan-Min Lin and Shao-Wen Liao, faced challenges due to the natural materials used in the case, which could deform due to weather differences. However, precise assembly and careful consideration of the different processing methods and material characteristics ensured the successful realization of Seed.

Seed is a testament to the enduring appeal of vinyl records. Despite the convenience of digital music, there remains a group of people who are passionate about vinyl and the tangible experience it provides. With Seed, HYM Originals hopes to appeal to a younger audience and make the vinyl experience more accessible without compromising on sound quality.
